Purple Hibiscus Response

So far, I am enjoying reading Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Right away the timeline of events in the book is in a different order which I find interesting. The novel is separated into sections titled "Palm Sunday", "Before Palm Sunday", "After Palm Sunday", and "Present". This creates a sense of mystery as to what happens on Palm Sunday and why the novel is based off of this one day. Also with the sections, they are titled relating to the religious Palm Sunday. This shows the novel has a religious aspect which determines much of how the family lives.

Another aspect of the book I find interesting is how much Papa controls his children's lives. He creates strict weekly schedules for his entire family. He also administers his children's participation in school and their grades. He holds Kambili and Jaja to extremely high expectations and does not accept anything lower than the best. An example of this is how disappointed he was in Kamibili for being second in her class. He visits her school making a statement of how Chinwe does not have two heads, to prove that there are no excuses for her coming in second. While parental control is important in children's lives, it will be interesting to see how Kambili and Jaja react to this level of control.

Response to "Harrison Bergeron"

After reading Harrison Bergeron I was left very perplexed and with many questions. This story is set in the future with a strict government. The government has decided everyone has to become equal to the most average person. This means anyone who is above average or with great talent, will be tortured into becoming lesser. The story focuses on a couple, George and Hazel Bergeron whose son has been taken away. This seems tragic but with Hazel's average intelligence and George's handicap radio in his ear, neither remember. Harrison Bergeron  follows a very common dystopian plot. This story reminds me very much of Divergent or The Giver in the sense that the government is trying to change or get rid of people in their community that are different. I have many questions regarding this story. Some level one questions are where is it set and what is the purpose of handicapping the people? A level two question would be what is the purpose or significance of the ballerinas? Lastly, ...

Gate A-4 by Naomi Shihab Nye

The world renowned poet, Naomi Shihab Nye visited my school and inspired me to look into more of her poems. Her poems focus on one moment in time but how that small moment connects to large issues or themes we, as the audience, should be aware of. The poem I chose, Gate A-4 , focuses on how our world should come together as a shared community. The theme–through the chaos and confusion, people should become united and comfortable with one another– is demonstrated through a moment when she helps a woman in an airport with a language barrier. The author hears of a woman who speaks Arabic and needs help in Gate A-4. She helps the woman understand that her flight is delayed, not cancelled and relaxes and waits with the woman. The author demonstrates kindness through her actions of calling the woman's family and calling her own family to pass the time. Other people at the gate all come together and pass the time, no one reluctant to share–food, memories. Nye ends the poem with "Th...

Research post

My topic for my research paper is the stages of the Holocaust. I focused on how the Jewish people were treated during the Holocaust and how their treatment evolved. The Holocaust was a time when the Nazis systematically murdered almost six million European Jews. The Nazis murdered the Jews through a plan made to answer "The Jewish Question".  Through this extermination of the Jewish population, other groups were targeted as well. My topic is important due to the underlying aspect of anti-semitism throughout history. My categories for my paper are the historical context, Jewish rights taken away, ghettos, deportation, and camps. These are the stages I chose to represent the evolution of the treatment of the Jews. It started with their rights slowly being taken away such as their citizenship. Second, they were isolated to ghettos that were under resourced and housed thirty to forty Jews in one home. Next, they were packed into cattle cars with no water and many died. Finally,...
